Hashim ‘s positive thinking transformed him from a rubber tapper’s son to becoming the eight Vice - Chancellor of University of Malaya and three more universities subsequently. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists United Kingdom; of the Royal College Surgeons of England ; of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow Scotland ; of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia ; of the Academy of Science Malaysia and a Chartered Biologists of the Institute of Biology United Kingdom. Earlier, he read Dental Surgery at the University of Otago New Zealand, Oral Pathology and Medicine at the University of London and Islamic Studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia.

He was also commissioned Captain (Colonel) in the Royal Malaysian Navy Reserve Division. Hashim s charisma, integrity and dynamism saw the University of Malaya placed in the Top 200 best universities. The Dental Surgery Degree hailed equal to the best in the world. The university collaborated with some of the finest Universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Peking, Seoul, Carnegie  Melon, National University Singapore, He also raised the standards of publications of Academic Books and Articles by the staff of the University of Malaya. Hashim’s passion for creative thinking has won him 15 gold, silver and bronze medals internationally for his scientific inventions. He is an accomplished poet, painter, and shadow play puppeteer.

2. CONTRIBUTIONS

(Academic/ professional/Community service/ charity):

 Authored more than 100 scientific papers, 147 conference paper presentations in dentistry, and authored or edited 7 books on education.

Winner of 21 medals  (gold, silver,  bronze) for scientific inventions at international and national levels.

Engineered the recognition by the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Malaya (1997). This is a world recognition.

Engineered the setting up of the FDSRCS Dental Specialist Qualification ( Fellow in Dental Surgery, of the Royal College of Surgeons of England) in Kuala Lumpur (1987), which did not exist previously.

Engineered the placing of the University of Malaya among THE-QS 200 best world universities (2004-2006). As the Vice-Chancellor of the University Malaya,

Engineered 52 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University of Malaya and 52 other universities, including Cambridge, Peking, Carnegie Melon, University California, London.

Chairman of Panel, for the setting up of the Kelantan University of Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan UMK (2006).

Captain, of the Malaysian Royal Navy Reserve Division (1987-2009)

Awarded the ‘Lifetime Professional Integrity Award’ by Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia and Rotary International, (2009).

Awarded the Honorary FDSRCS Ad Eundem (Fellow in Dental Surgery, of the Royal College of Surgeons of England) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, (1995) – first Asian to have received the award.

Awarded the FFOP (RCPA) (Foundation Fellow in Oral Pathology of The Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia), by  The Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia (1996) – first Malaysian to have received the award.

Awarded the CBiol (Chartered Biologist) by The Institute of Biology, United Kingdom, (1996) –First Malaysian Dental Surgeon to have received the award.

Awarded the Distinguished Scholar at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia by The Asean University Network (2006).

Awarded the FASc  (Fellow of the Academy of Science of Malaysia) by the Academy of Science Malaysia, (2000)

Awarded the FRCPath (Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists UK) by the Royal College of Pathologists United Kingdom (2013).

Awarded the Excellent Scientist Award (Saintis Cemerlang) by the Ministry of Higher Education (2004 & 2005).

4. ACHIEVEMENTS PERTAINING TO BAHASA MALAYSIA AND CULTURE

MEMARTABATKAN BAHASA MALAYSIA SEBAGAI BAHASA ILMU DIPERINGKAT GLOBAL

Engineered the recognition by the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom (GDC) for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree (BDS) from the University of Malaya (1997). This is a world recognition. This degree course was totally taught in Bahasa Malaysia. The GDC recognises BDS degrees from Spain, Italy, Holland, France, Germany that used their own language as medium of teaching. With the GDC recognition of the BDS degree from the University of Malaya, Bahasa Malaysia automatically becomes Bahasa Ilmu at par with Spanish, Italian, Dutch, French and German in the eyes of the GDC.
