Overview of the Department

This department started as one of six pioneer teaching departments of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya when it opened in 1971. Its name has evolved over the years from being the Department of Preventive Dentistry (1971-1994); Department of Community Dentistry (1995-2012) and is currently known as the Department of Community Oral Health and Clinical Prevention (2013 onwards). The department’s current name is meant to better reflect its role as a centre of excellence and a catalyst in providing a high standard of teaching, training and research in the field of oral health promotion and prevention (including clinical prevention)
The Department of Community Oral Health & Clinical Prevention is one of the five departments in the Faculty of Dentistry. It serves as a link between academia and the community. The Department strives towards optimal oral health for all the people in Malaysia through the excellent undergraduate and post graduate training programmes in Community Oral Health.

The strengths of this department is evident in the experienced members of academic staff ranging from senior professors, associate professors and senior lecturers who, as a team, are committed to achieving the vision and mission of the department through the teaching of various themes of dental public health within the required scope of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs that are being offered. In doing so, it is the department’s prime objective to produce responsible graduates who are competent in the practice of oral health promotion and prevention and who are able to carry out their duties professionally, with good attributes and be sensitive and able to adapt to the changing oral health needs of the population.
