Overview
This newly formed deparment is the result of the amalgamation of two former departments and one division. They were the Department of Conservative Dentistry, the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and the Periodontology division of the former Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Peridontology. As a result, this academic department oversees the specialty related to conservative dentistry, prosthetic dentistry and periodontology, collectively known as Restorative Dentistry. Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral functions, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by restoration of teeth (by fiillings, root canal treatment and/or crown) and/or replacement of the missing structures with removable or fix prostheses and the use of dental implants.
Conservative dentistry encompasses the disciplines of operative dentistry, endodontics and fixed prosthodontics while prosthetic dentistry encompasses mainly removable prosthodontics. Periodontology completes the picture by focusing on the structures that support the dentition. It is the aim of this department to ensure that students gain the appropriate knowledge, attitudes, communication skills and understanding of scientific and clinical principles to enable them provide comprehensive oral rehabilitation in an integrated clinical, academic and research environment.
This department is responsible for the teaching of Dental Materials and Dental Technology throughout the Year 2 of the Bachelor of Dentistry programme. We practise research-led learning where we incorporate the latest findings and perspectives related to restorative dentistry. Learning is facilitated through a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars, clinical case studies, problem-based learning and conducting research. Additionally, there are opportunities to develop practical skills and abilities in creative and critical enquiry. Research techniques, practices and principles represent fundamental components of the training programme. Continuing dental education programmes organized by the department as well as other specialties compliments the already integrated programme.
We are committed to attract staff and students of talent, ensure high quality of all our programmes and produce graduates and postgraduates who meet the present and future global health-care needs.
