Introduction
Craniomaxillofacial surgery is a subspecialized area focusing on the treatment of skull, face and jaw deformities. The complexity of these deformities often requires multi-disciplinary involvement of various medical and dental specialties to provide optimum rehabilitation.

To date, Combined Craniofacial Clinic in University of Malaya Medical Centre is the only multi-disciplinary centre in Malaysia providing comprehensive care to patients.

Oro-Craniomaxillofacial Research and Surgical (OCReS) group is a dedicated craniofacial research  group established in 2016 focusing in the advancement of research and development in the field of craniofacial surgery.
 
Aims

  • To provide comprehensive training to specialist with craniofacial interest
  • To increase the number of specialists in the subspecialty of craniofacial surgery


Requirement

  • Candidates are certified specialist from oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery or plastic surgery (certified by Ministry of Health or National Specialist Registrar)
  • Candidates have at least 3 years experience in their respective specialty.
  • Able to communicate either in English or Malay
  • Registered with Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) or Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) with active practicing certificate.

Duration
12 - 18 months

Attachment fee
RM 30,000 (Ringgit Malaysia Thirty Thousand only)


Scope of specialty

  • Dentofacial deformity – syndromic and non-syndromic
  • Craniofacial deformity – syndromic and non-syndromic
  • Craniomaxillofacial reconstruction
  • Craniomaxillofacial tissue engineering
  • Craniomaxillofacial prostheses and implants


Attachment objectives
At the end of the attachment, candidate is expected to be able to provide comprehensive management of patient with craniomaxillofacial deformity with the focus on:

  • Patient’s assessment and evaluation
  • Pre-surgical work-up and planning including surgical guides, simulation and important functional assessment
  • Surgical techniques and other alternatives
  • Peri-operative medical co-management with other relevant specialties
  • Post-surgical management
  • Management of peri-operative complications


Completion and certification requirement

  • Full involvement in multi-disciplinary clinics
  • Fulfilling the required number of patients seen in multidisciplinary specialty clinics
  • Fulfilling the required number of surgical procedures
  • Fulfilling the required number of case work-ups
  • A case report presentation to boards of specialty
  • Approval by consultants in craniofacial specialty
